Spanakopita is a traditional Greek spinach pie with a filling consisting of spinach, feta, onions, egg, and seasoning. The filling is wrapped in flaky phyllo dough bread. It is known for being a popular Greek savory pastry often eaten as an appetizer. It often appears in most Greek and international cooking books. It is often served either at home or in restaurants as an appetizer, or as take-out.

According to Greek on Wheels, the exact date or even time period in which spanakopita was invented is hard to trace. Most people believe it dates back to about 400 years ago, with the traditional recipe deriving from north-west Greece. The savory dish may have taken inspiration from the Turkish ispanakli, a dish that consists of flaky bread, cheese, and spinach. Over the years many different Mediterranean countries have fought over ownership of many different dishes such as souvlaki or baklava, but Spanakopita will likely remain as a traditionally Greek dish, and it will remain as a insanely popular food.

  1. Those look tasty! They remind me of an Irish food called Boxty. They're made of mashed potato cakes, and often stuffed with either kale or cabbage and meat. They also can be made into boxty pancakes. Boxty is traditionally eaten on St. Brigid's day.

  2. The Spanakopita looks so good! It reminds me of Italian Spaghetti because both are a traditional dish and both are extremely popular. Also, both of them can be eaten as appetizers or a meal. Interesting!
